Steven and I have been a little busy with some summer classes. He just completed his Kindermusik class. The theme was Zoo Train. Each class they would sing the Alley-Alley-O song as they rode the train to visit the different animals in the zoo. We visited the lions, monkeys, polar bears, penguins, parrots, giraffes, seals, and even a kookaburra!! Miss Katherine had them using instruments, scarves, hula- hoops, rhythm blocks, balls, as well as dancing movements. I really thought he was going to love the class but it wasn't his thing. He did like playing with the different instruments and props but the marching and dramatic movement he could have gone without. If anything, he did learn some animal sounds as well as learning to follow directions and put things away.
The next class we are participating in is gymnastics. It is a tot-mom class and he LOVES it!!!! He is a very physical child. The most difficult part of the class is waiting his turn. He is quite impulsive!! On Tuesday when we walked in the room he pointed at the equipment and moved his finger in a circle while babbling "explaining what we were going to do today!"
Our last class this summer is swim lessons. They are held at the hospital's fitness center so the pool is inside and heated which is very nice. Yesterday was a very big day for both of us. We had to go under the water...I was terrified!!! He did it at least five times and never came up coughing. He does keep his mouth open a little too much but the instructor told me we can work on closing the mouth next time. He has learned how to crawl along the wall and climb out safely. We are going to continue working on kicking, back floating, and going under the water!
I get updates from the website Baby Center telling me what Steven should be doing at his age, how to handle different situations, etc. and a week ago they mentioned how a child Steven's age does not need to be in a structured group class. They said that the traditional play date is all they need. My reaction to this: One more mistake to add to my parental mess ups!!! :)
